What is DevOps? The Ultimate Guide to DevOps

What is DevOps?

“Dev” stands for “development” and “Ops” stands for “operations.” It means a group of software engineering practices and a way of life that try to bring together software development and operations. DevOps’ main goals are:

  • Shorter cycles of development
  • More frequent deployments
  • More reliable releases
  • Fit with the goals of the business

DevOps is primarily a cultural movement. It stresses working together between developers and operations staff, which has led to a set of tools and practices that support this way of working. But DevOps is not a set of tools, even though tools like Jenkins, Ansible, and Kubernetes are often used.

  • A formal standard (there are best practices, but no official standards)
  • A product
  • A job title (this is about the culture of the whole company, not just one team)

A Brief History of DevOps

DevOps came from the Agile software development movement, which focuses on delivering software in small, frequent cycles so that it can quickly respond to changing needs. The older “waterfall” model, which used long planning and release cycles, was replaced by Agile.

DevOps started around 2007–2009 to help developers (who wanted quick releases) and operations (who wanted systems to be stable) work together better. Important events are:

  • 2007: People like Patrick Debois who work in the field are getting more and more frustrated with the gap between development and operations.
  • 2008: At the Agile 2008 conference, Patrick Debois and Andrew Shafer start talking about how to close the gap between Dev and Ops.
  • 2009: John Allspaw and Paul Hammond give a key talk at the Velocity Conference about how Flickr was able to deploy quickly thanks to DevOps cooperation.
  • In October 2009, Patrick Debois puts together the first “DevOps Days” event in Ghent, Belgium. This event helped start the global DevOps movement.

DevOps has become popular since then, changing the IT industry and leading to the development of new tools and methods. Many successful and creative companies today use DevOps ideas.

Conclusion

In short, DevOps is a big change in the way software is made, released, and run, with a focus on working together, speed, and dependability. It is a movement led by people who work in the field, and it is still changing the way software is made and IT operations work.

Responsible and proactive professional with more than 13 years of experience in IT systems, open source software applications, DevOps, Linux systems, and cloud operations. My main goals are to automate things, keep them safe, and make sure they are strong. I am very good at planning and building the infrastructure for services that people really want. I was drawn to the fast-paced world of cloud computing because it has resources that can be scaled up or down as needed. One of my best skills is being able to use a lot of different DevOps tools to set up, release management, and microservices ecosystems, as well as for provisioning, orchestration, and configuration management.
